Independent Analysis · Maya Brennan

I tested 14 AI marketing tools for a year. Here's what I wish I'd known before I spent $18,000.

Not a list of “top tools.” The honest version — including the one that finally got me off the subscription treadmill, and the free sheet that shows you every number side by side.

A year ago I added up what I was spending on AI marketing software. Copywriting tool. SEO tool. A separate one for video. Another for creatives. One more for email and automation. The total stopped me cold: a little over $1,800 a month — and I didn't own a single thing. The day I stopped paying, it all switched off.

That's roughly $18,000 a year to rent capabilities I'd never keep. And I'm supposed to be the person who knows better — I ran growth teams for fifteen years before I went independent. If it caught me, it's catching you too.

The trap nobody selling you these tools mentions

Every one of these products is priced to look small. $29 here, $49 there, $99 for the “pro” tier you actually need. Each one feels reasonable in isolation. Stacked, they quietly become the biggest line item in your business — and the renewal never stops.

So I did the boring thing. I spent the year actually testing them — 200+ hours, real campaigns, real money — and I scored each one on a number nobody else publishes: not what it costs to rent, but what it costs to own over a year.

What changed my mind

Most of the sheet is what you'd expect — the good, the overpriced, the ones I'd skip. But one tool broke the pattern entirely, and it's the reason I bothered writing this.

Instead of one more $99/month subscription, it was a one-time license that runs on hardware I already own — and it replaces most of the stack I was renting. I ran the math three times because I didn't believe it: the subscriptions I was carrying came to $18,720 a year, every year. The tool that replaced them was $5,000, once. It pays for itself in three to four months and then costs me nothing.

I'm not going to hard-sell it here — that's not what I do, and it isn't for everyone (if you're pre-revenue, it's the wrong move, and I say so in the review). But it's why I sit it at #1, and it's in the sheet with everything else so you can judge the numbers yourself.

Why I'm giving the sheet away

Because the affiliate sites ranking these tools are paid to push whatever pays them most, and you can feel it. I grade on cost-to-own and data control, I state my bias plainly, and I'd rather earn your trust than your first click. The sheet is free. Read it, disagree with me, keep what's useful.
