Maya Brennan is a 15-year martech operator and former VP of Growth who now reviews AI marketing tools independently — testing each one hands-on and grading it on cost-to-own and data control. No vendor pays for placement.
Tested hands-on over 60 days of real production use before publishing.
Full disclosure upfront: SEMrush denied my affiliate application in April 2026 because my site had low traffic. So I bought a subscription myself and tested it for 60 days. This review has no financial incentive.
What SEMrush does that nothing else matches: The competitor analysis. I typed in two competing affiliate sites in my niche and immediately saw every keyword they rank for, their estimated monthly traffic, their top-performing pages, and their backlink sources. That intelligence took me 20 minutes to gather. Without SEMrush, I'd spend days manually piecing that together — and still miss most of it.
Keyword Magic Tool — the feature I use most: You enter a seed keyword, and Surfer organizes 25 billion+ related keywords by volume, difficulty, intent, and trend. The intent clustering (informational vs. commercial vs. transactional) is what matters for affiliate content — it tells you which keywords have buyers behind them vs. researchers.
Site Audit: I ran my site through SEMrush's audit on day 1. It flagged 23 technical issues — missing meta descriptions, slow pages, redirect chains. Fixing them took a weekend. Within 30 days, 3 pages that had been stuck on page 2 moved to page 1. I can't attribute all of that to the fixes, but the correlation was clear.
Where it fell short: $139/month is hard to justify for a new site with low traffic. The ROI only becomes obvious once you're generating enough organic traffic that improving rankings translates to real affiliate revenue. I'd recommend starting with Frase ($14.99/mo) and upgrading to SEMrush once you're hitting 500+ monthly visitors.
The learning curve is also real — I spent the first two weeks just figuring out which reports to use. Beginners should set aside time to learn the tool before expecting results from it.
