I set up HubSpot's free CRM and Starter tier for 30 days while evaluating email platforms for my affiliate sites. Here's what I found.
The free CRM is legitimately useful: Contact tracking, deal pipelines, email open tracking, and form embeds — all free, no credit card. For a growing content business that needs to track subscriber behavior and affiliate conversions, the free tier gives you more than most paid CRMs at smaller competitors. I used it to track my ConvertKit subscribers alongside Recelis affiliate activity.
AI email writing built into the editor: HubSpot's AI writing assistant lives inside the email drag-and-drop editor. You highlight a section, choose "Rewrite" or "Expand," and it generates a new version inline. No switching to Jasper, copy-pasting, formatting again. For teams who send email through HubSpot, this friction reduction is meaningful.
The A/B testing at Starter is a genuine differentiator: Most email platforms lock A/B testing behind higher tiers. HubSpot includes it at $45/month — useful for testing subject lines and send times without paying ActiveCampaign's higher tier pricing.
Where it fell short: The pricing cliff. HubSpot's Starter tier at $45/month is reasonably priced. But the moment you want custom reporting, smart lists, or SEO tools, you're looking at Pro at $800+/month. That jump is steep and catches people off guard when they're planning budgets.
For a solo affiliate site, HubSpot is also genuinely overkill. The platform is built for teams with multiple people touching CRM records, deals, and campaigns simultaneously. If you're a solo operator, ConvertKit or ActiveCampaign serves the same email needs at lower cost with less complexity.
My honest take: Start with HubSpot's free CRM — it's the best free CRM available and there's no reason not to use it. For email marketing specifically, evaluate whether you need the platform integrations or just want clean email automation. If it's the latter, ActiveCampaign gives you more automation power for the price.
